On August 12, 2013, it was reported that Geo G. has been set to direct the feature.[5] It will be the second Illumination Entertainment film to have a video game adaptation after The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, which was scheduled for a release on April 15, 2016.[6] In May 2014, it was announced that Legendary Pictures would co-finance the film for Universal and Illumination.[1]
